Atlanta United will look back on this one and wonder how they didn’t win it. They had the better chances for most of the night, hit the woodwork, forced a string of saves out of Brian Schwake, and still walked away with nothing. Nashville SC found a way, as they so often seem to against this opponent, with Shak Mohammed’s 79th-minute header settling it 1-0 at a packed GEODIS Park.
This was the first game back for both clubs after the near two-month break for the World Cup, and it showed early on, both sides looked a little rusty, a little cautious. Atlanta were the ones who adjusted quicker. Jay Fortune caused problems within the first ten minutes before picking up an injury and making way for Will Reilly, and from there it was mostly Atlanta pressing, Nashville absorbing.
Didn’t matter in the end. Nashville have now beaten Atlanta in both meetings this season, the first time they’ve ever swept the series, and they’re unbeaten in five of their last six against the Five Stripes. Home form at GEODIS Park is now seven wins, zero losses and a draw in MLS play this year. Numbers like that don’t happen by accident.
Atlanta Dominate, Nashville Hold Firm
The chances kept coming for the visitors. Fortune dribbled through midfield early and found Almirón on the left, whose shot from a tight angle forced a good save out of Schwake at the near post. A little later, Miranchuk and Almirón combined again, this time picking out Brennan in behind with a perfectly weighted through ball. Brennan got his shot away too, low and hard, only for Schwake to push it over the bar.
That was more or less the story of the first hour. Atlanta doing the right things, working the ball into good areas, and Schwake standing tall every time Nashville needed him. Nashville, missing Cristian Espinoza, one of their most productive players this season with three goals and eight assists, weren’t creating much of their own. They didn’t need to, not yet.
Mohammed’s Header Changes Everything
The breakthrough, when it came, arrived almost out of nowhere. Alex Muyl picked up the ball on the left in the 79th minute and floated a cross toward the back post. Shak Mohammed rose above his marker and nodded it into the far corner. That was that. Atlanta pushed for a response in the closing stretch but couldn’t find the finish their overall performance probably deserved, and Nashville saw out a result that felt, by the numbers at least, harsh on the visitors.
Schwake ended the night with five saves and his eighth shutout of the season, still the best mark in the league, and he’s now gone two starts against Atlanta this year without conceding. Mohammed, meanwhile, has scored in back-to-back games against the Five Stripes, and there’s a growing sense that whatever it is Nashville do against this particular opponent, it just works. For Atlanta, the frustration is obvious. Dominant for large stretches, undone by one moment of quality they couldn’t match at the other end.
What’s Next
Atlanta United hit the road for a stretch now, starting Wednesday, 22 July, at Charlotte FC, before further away trips to New England and Philadelphia. They won’t be back at Mercedes-Benz Stadium until mid-August, when the New York Red Bulls come to town. Nashville, sitting atop MLS’s Supporters’ Shield standings and riding a four-game winning streak, will look to keep the momentum going as the second half of the season gets underway.

Conclusion
Sometimes the scoreline doesn’t tell the full story, and this was one of those nights. Atlanta United did most things right and still came away empty-handed, undone by a single header they couldn’t find an answer for. Nashville, missing key pieces and far from their sharpest, once again found a way to get the job done against this particular rival. That’s now two wins from two against Atlanta this season, and Nashville’s home form shows no signs of slowing down.
